I don't use the TFTP server remotely very often. I do know that when I try and back-up a config from the solarwinds server, I have to manually go into the TFTP server settings and tell it what IP address to use. You can't even change the default, which would be nice. Sorry I don't have any answers. Lockheed Martin Atlas V…

Well it has a full feature syslog server, it does all levels of logging. It will accecpt all sort of logging your devices will send. It does not except "SNMP" type traps. The other tools ie... Network PerfMon and such, use a combination of ICMP and SNMP to poll devices and retrive information to display in tools. It works…

If SNMP is blocked and you aren't the administrator and can't disable it, then you probably don't need to be doing what your trying... The program is pretty usless without being able to communicate via SNMP.. Lockheed Martin Atlas V Launch Operations Network Engineer

I have contacted them about it also and was told to purchase Orion. They told me that with the number of nodes and interfaces that I was monitoring, that Toolsets wasn't designed for my situation. I think it would be nothing for Solarwinds to port NPM to SQL. The real draw to Orion is the web enabled monitoring. I use Big…

There are notification engines on several tools. You can point them to a mail relay and then specify specific email address you want notified. Lockheed Martin Atlas V Launch Operations Network Engineer

srvany.exe works but it causes problems with the way the applications work. I tried this method and found little bugs like printing issues and such. These problems didn't happend when I started the application normally.. Lockheed Martin Atlas V Launch Operations Network Engineer

First of all you need to identify what else is already using that port. You shouldn't need two syslog type applications running on the same system. I use two but they are are different systems for redundancy. I don't believe that the Solarwinds application allows you the option of changing that port used for syslog. In…

The listed min sys req on the website are best suited for those using EE as a test tool and not those doing enterprise monitoring. The system that you were thinking about would be much better suited and would meet the req for Orion. You might want to consider going Gig-E for the NIC. Lockheed Martin Atlas V Launch…

Don't have that problem? Maybe you can make a shortcut the screensaver app with password enabled. When you leave the computer, activate the screensaver. If someone tried to get in, they will be prompted with a password. Maybe this will solve your problem. What version of SW are you running? What OS? Lockheed Martin Atlas V…

only way I found that works is to set to workstation to auto-login and then add shortcuts of the applications into the startup folder. If you are security aware, you can also add the screensave application with password protection to lock out the workstation after login. Lockheed Martin Atlas V Launch Operations Network…

There is no way to stop the message gathering. At the top of the screen, you can drag and seperate the colum heads to view the whole message. If you see a message that catches your eye, pick something out of the message to go back and search for. I have mine running in a window all sized the way I like it. The downside is…

I think you can import your network sonar discovery into your IP address management.....? Lockheed Martin Atlas V Launch Operations Network Engineer

Here is the deal.. The Solarwinds apps do not play was with these external service programs. I have tried SRVANY.exe and others and always find a problem. What I did was put all of the programs in the startup folder including the screensaver.exe program. Then I used an adminstrative account and setup an autologin.. So if…

Under NPM settings there is an Alerts tab. Just put a check in the "High Receive Percent Utilization" and on in the "High Transmit Percent Utilization" and fill out the required action and threshold. Lockheed Martin Atlas V Launch Operations Network Engineer

Everyone has their own preference. Personally I thougth Big Brother and MRTG were easy to set up but what I didn't like was MRTG's historical capability. I wanted to be able to pull up detailed info for any day. MRTG gives you general history and it's more and more general the futher back in time you go. But it is a great…
-
Not really built in. I'm sure you could find some sort of macro software to trace your mouse clicks. Or you can use the XML snapshot that it will make automatically. You just have to find something that will convert the XML data back into graphical form. Have you ever used MRTG? It is free and will give you a graphical…

The only option is to utilize the XML snapshot feature and parse the data to put on webpage. If you do a search, you'll find some example scripts to perform this function. Lockheed Martin Atlas V Launch Operations Network Engineer

quote:Originally posted by Network_Guru Some of the features requested here are already part of Orion. Chances are they are not included in EE, in order to differentiate the products. -=Cheers=- NG The main difference between the two products is the web capability of Orion. That is what makes it great for the enterprise…

You can call out batch files and such to perfrom these type of functions. I have mine set up send "net send" messages to my workstations where I sit, that way I get a popup alert for node actions. Lockheed Martin Atlas V Launch Operations Network Engineer

I think it is a resonable request to ask that the Database problem be resolved. Adding the ability to use SQL for NPM instead of MS Access would be great. In my opinion, this would not come close to making Toolsets more like Orion, which is what Solarwinds has told me on the phone. Orion is a web-based management system,…

If you want to track temp and humidity via SNMP, you could build a custom config for MRTG (multi-router traffic grapher). MRTG will monitor and track just about anything that supports SNMP. It runs on the unix platfor (solaris/linux/HPuix). You have to know the OID for the devices you want to monitor. www.mrtg.org Lockheed…

Agreed, CLI is the only way to go when configuring a network. But products like solarwinds do make gathering statistics much easier! For the longest time I used MRTG and a program called Big Brother, my only issue then MRTG was that you couldn't pull historical data from it. I like to be able to go back and zoom in on a…

Switch clusters. I used to have about 8 switch clusters in my network. They were catalyst 3548. I walked in to the network after it was already built and the first thing I did was un-cluster those switches. I thing management is much easier with individual managed switches. Just my thought on the subject. I didn't have…

To expand about the CPU, I know you can use the SNMP graphing utility but I like the simplicity of the advanced CPU load. What would be so hard about adding in support for the SUN mibs for cpu and multi cpu support?

The two main differences between Toolsets and Orion are the database limitation and the web capability. Solarwinds has integrated the syslog server in Toolsets into SQL, why not the NPM? I own both products and from personal experience, the reason that I purchased Orion was for the web capability. I don't see why…
-
This is the biggest limitation to the Toolsets. To perform the maintenance, make sure that NetPerfMon is shutdown. Look in the solarwinds directory and there is an exe file call Database-Maint.exe kick this file off and fun the utility. This will shrink the access database size greatly and allow for continued monitoring.…

Well you have two fields: Hostname / IP: 192.168.1.1 Community String: Private@2 You need to put the VLAN # with the community string. Lockheed Martin Atlas V Launch Operations Network Engineer

You should try and run a ping sweep across the subnet but build up your routers ARP table. Then run the MAC add discovery and see what kind of results you get. When I run the Discovery, it does vary it's results from time to time. Not sure why that would be? Laterz, Lockheed Martin Atlas V Launch Operations Network Engineer
