Suggestions for advanced SNMP trap handling?

Folks,

We're configuring a teleconferencing center here, and we're planning to use Solarwinds to handle some or all of the hardware monitoring. Most of the hardware can raise alerts using SNMP traps. Obviously, Solarwinds can catch SNMP traps and take action. However, they're also asking if we can receive traps from one set of hardware, repackage the information in those traps, and then send that information to another SNMP trap receiver.

I know I could put together a combination of custom scripts and Solarwinds alerts to do this. What I'd really like,though, is a standalone trap handling "engine" in which I could build a workflow to catch and aggregate the information from incoming traps based on our rules, generate new traps with the information needed by the destination application, and send the new traps.

Is anyone doing this? What tools do you use?

Might be worth giving it a vote for some more visibility. I too would like some sort of SNMP Trap or Syslog handling within Orion.

From the Orion Trap Viewer, in the alert rules, there are alert actions to forward (the original) traps to other NMS, or you could use either the execute external program or VBscript options to send the snmptrap.

You will need either snmptrap.exe (Net-SNMP) available locally or use one of the many VB or powershell methods.

You could drop Orion for that try to look at Kiwisyslog

That 250$ magic work better with SNMP trap and Syslog...

It's support forward and scripts like VBscript to change the payload

Thanks. Right now I'm working on project where the end user has already decided that forwarding traps isn't what he needs. However, trap forwarding will probably be exactly what we need for other projects.
