BGP Alerting Very Slow

Hi Everyone

I am really new to solarwind so will really appreciate if someone can help me configuring advanced alert.

I am having Tabular Universal Device Poller (BGP Peers.UnDP) which gives me all Bgp neighbor Ips and their status. I am alerting on this Custom Poller. when i simulate the alert, it took NPM 2 minutes to alert me that BGP state has gone to idle. And if i just do BGP flapping for three four seconds, it doesn't even trigger the alert.

Can someone tell me that why it is so slow? I am polling the node after every 10 seconds and this specific alert is being checked after every 15 seconds (by default, it is 1 minute. But i changed to 15 seconds). Even the alert manager active window refresh rate is reduced to 10 seconds but still it is taking minimum to two minutes to fire an alert.

I would really be thankful if anyone can help in this regard

this is no real-time alerting... you would need to configure snmp-traps for this... otherwise check how often orion polls your custom pollers, it probably isnt 10seconds...

for flapping you really need to configure snmp-traps... but orion isn't really the best tool for this use-case

Thank you so much for your reply. i also thought so and infact today, i was trying to fire an alert on basis of BGP snmp trap. And as u said, it is quite fast so that can help.

But honestly, now i am really in doubt that orion is good for what purpose?? i just bought it few days back for my company coz i heard alot about it. But now i am really disappointed with its performance.

It cannot play sound as an alert in windows server 2008

Even the built-in alert like "alert me when node goes down" takes more than 30 seconds to fire an alert despite of polling the node after every 10 seconds (which is not even recommended by the company).

And now you are telling me that orioin is not the best case for BGP flapp alerting.

So far, i just did the above tests and for each test, i got disappointed.

Since you are the expert, i would really appreciate if you can tell me that for what purpose we should use solarwind then and why you actually preferred it over other management softwares. I am asking coz our company have not paid yet for the license and i am seriously thinking not to buy it

For instant notifications of any type of flapping or error an SNMP trap will always be quicker than a poll regardless of the management program utilized. To poll your devices every 10 seconds puts unnecessary loads on the network.

It is considered best practice to take these type of alerts via a trap and not a poll.

I have used HP Openview, nAble, Kaseya, Level Platforms and Solarwinds in a NOC environment for over 10 years and I will take Solarwinds over all of them. Sure it can't do everything I don't think any product can but it does the majority of what I need it to accomplish and it does it well.
