Group/Dependency Alerts

OK, So I have need a little help setting up alerts for my groups/dependencies. I have created groups for each site that has a router as the parent and everything behind it as the children.

I have an advanced alert setup for when a group goes down, I get an email.

I have another alert setup for when an individual device goes down I get an email.

How do I tie these together?

Ultimately, if my router (parent) is down I do not want to get alerts that all the children devices are down.

What I am suggesting would use a node trigger, not a group trigger. Gouping and setting the dependency on a parent object will take care of the alerts on clild objects. You don't need to build that into the alert. You may be complicating this too much. All you need to do is make the groups, set each group as being dependent on the firewall that connects the group and you are done. The standard Node Down alert will work with this. This tech ref may be helpful in understanding how this works.

Have you gone through the creation of appropriate dependencies? Grouping devices is one activity, actually defineing their dependent relationships is a second activity. Defined dependencies should allow you to better tailor your alerts to eliminate unnecessary alerts for your environment. I created the groups and then I created a dependency with the router as the parent and the group (dynamic query) as the child. Is there another step I am missing?

Do I need to suppress the individual device alert? Do I need the individual device alert anymore?

If you've got your groups and dependencies defined correctly for your environment, the individual device alerts will be redundant. You can remove them.
