Asset Auto Updating

Hey All,

Recently found that with integration with entra and intune, assets will be able to field match to either the UPN or the email address and automatically populate the asset owners. This is great for Intune, but we don't use intune for our macs. Has anyone found a way through API or other to connect and get information from Entra to then auto populate the user and then their department and site? Don't have much background in API's but willing to do the work if other's have found luck!

Do you have E5 licenses? M365 E5 licensing includes the full Microsoft Graph API surface and Power Automate. Power Automate is the lowest-friction path to accomplish this without deep API coding experience.

We have a mix of e5 / e1's but the majory of end users with machines have e5's. I never thought of powerautomate to work into this. I'm curious if you could elaborate more on how that can update the solarwinds assets department and site with that.

The department and site fields in SWSD assets are relational fields meaning they do not accept free-text strings directly. They must reference pre-existing department and site records within SWSD. This is the most common failure point when attempting automated asset updates and requires a lookup step before the update call.

This means your automation must Query Entra for the user's department and office/site values. Then you will look up the matching SWSD Department and Site IDs you cannot just pass the name string blindly. Patch the asset with the verified SWSD object references.

Yeah, I made sure that all the departments and fields matched from AD > sync to entra and then when we connected azure for users to SWSD - made sure that those matched and synced properly, so already got that good to go. I'm setting up the api permissions for intune through entra now and i do see power automate in there.

I will take a look into this and give it a try! I'll message back if it works or have questions if that's okay!

I think I need to have a scanner going but we don't have that currently and only get our devices from the discovery agent. So going to connect with our service manager and see what we can do and then I'll dive in. Thanks so much!
