Creating an Alert for CRC and Error Counts

Hey Folks,

I hope you're all having a great weekend!

I’ve been trying to build an alert for CRC and Error counts, but I’m a bit confused about the difference between CRC and Error. Are they two separate things, or do they refer to the same issue?

I attended the SolarWinds office hours to learn more, but I didn’t get much information beyond this link, which the trainer provided as a reference:

I’m looking to create this alert on the Router WAN interfaces we use in our organization. If you could suggest any steps, useful links, or documents that would help me better understand and build this alert, it would be really helpful.

CRC's are a specific type of error, at least on routers themselves errors are more generic. Guessing SW mimics that logic. So, all CRC's are errors, but not all errors are CRC's.

Here is a start on creating one. Use Interface as your trigger condition

The next section will be filtering it to specific nodes or interfaces, you fill that part out...

Then use this logic for the Error portion

The alert you shared is my last option, as it uses historical data rather than real-time data, based on my understanding. In this case, the alert when we receive, during that time error or CRC count is very low or even zero as it was a past activity. I was wondering—what is the standard evaluation interval in this scenario? Will it be every 1, 5, or 10 minutes?

Standard polling interval is 9 minutes I think? You can modify that if you need to. Personally I'd want to be informed if CRC's were far less than 10000 in an hour. I'd probably go as low as 50 or 100, but adjust to your preference...
