100% CPU Spikes every 5 minutes

For the longest time, we have been having a problem with our machine that houses our SolarWinds Orion/NPM database. Every five minutes or so, the CPU utilization spikes up to 100% and stays there for a few minutes before going back down again. Five minutes later, its back at 100% again. This has been happening ever since we've started to use NPM and setup the machine for it. I've tried a lot of different things to fix it, none of them worked.

After doing the smart thing and monitoring the activity on the SQL server, I found out whats probably causing the problem: the stored procedure for getting the current values of settings for SolarWinds Orion (sw_GetSettingsCurrentValue) is being ran thousands upon thousands of times (see attached) and I can't figure out for the life of me why.

Is there something up with my Solarwinds installation that needs to be taken care of? Is there some setting that got messed up during setup?

I'm not sure where you got that expensive query information from (not a DBA myself), but I'd be willing to have a look at one of my own instances for you, to see if I'm getting the same number of executions/min. Let me know how you got the data and I'll have a look for you!

‌how many devices\ interfaces are you monitoring? Your devices may be set to update their stats every 5 minutes.

Have you tried to repair the database by running orion configuration? From your NPM server run

What the server configuration?
You have how many nodes?
As was access to the interface on the server when there was an increase in CPU load?
Try to repair the Orion Core. after running CW.

221 nodes and 52 interfaces. Changing the polling interval has not changed the the pattern of spikes. I have recently updated NPM and ran the configuration wizard but it has not fixed the problem.

The information is from the Activity Monitor in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. To access it, log into the sql server that has the SolarWindsOrion database on it. Once connected, right click the server and bring up the context menu and select Activity Monitor.

Was it happening it pre-upgrade?

i have to ask have restarted SQL server?

Agree with cjfranca, need a bit more information to be able to assist with proper diagnosis. What is server? Physical/Virtual? Hardware config to include proc count, speed, RAM etc.

Device and interface count is very low, so you are definitely experiencing some issues that should not be happening. (potentially)

Go to Admin - Details - Polling Engines and see if your polling is completing or having issues.
