HP stack problem

I am having a problem with the template for HP switches. It works fine for all switches on the network that are stand alone. However, if we have them configured as stacks for management purposes NCM is unable to login to the switch acting as the commander. This is because of a response required that is asking which switch unit you would like to connect to immediately after logging in. Using a precommand does not work because the precommand is sent prior to logging in when the standard banner appears causing the username to fail. Does anyone have a workaround for this?

Well I got a little futher. If I add the following to my template:

I can succesfully complete a 'Validate Login' test.

Sadly when I then attempt to download a running config i get 'Connection Refused by <ip adddress>'

Try this, here is a post I made having the same issue!

The configs are located at C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Configuration Management\DeviceTypes on the server that NCM is installed. NOTE this cold be C:\Program Files also, depending on if its a 64 bit system or not.

Open Network Configuration Manager

Double click the commander node or add the node to your list if it does not exist. (If you add it do not worry about the details yet once it is added double click the node in the node list)

Under Discovered Properties look at the system description and System OID

In the folder where the configs are located find the node you have: In my case the properties listed above were:

System Description - HP J4865A ProCurve Switch 4108GL, revision G.07.93, ROM G.05.02 (/sw/code/build/gamo(m03))

System OID - 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.7.11.23

The file I needed to edit was: HP J4865A ProCurve Switch 4108GL-1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.7.11.23.ConfigMgmt-Commands I renamed it to HP J4865A ProCurve Switch Stacked 4108GL-1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.7.11.23.ConfigMgmt-Commands

Open the new file you created and decipher the details in the link posted above for your particular device.

On the node details scroll down to Communication and choose the new template you created for Device Command Template (You may have to double click the field to get a drop down box.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately I have tried this approach without success so far. The problem is that if i set the virtualprompt login fails at the banner before getting to the username prompt. If i do not set the virtual prompt option the connection times out waiting for input to select a switch to connect to after the username and password are provide successfully. Similarly the use of a precommand (i have tried several characters) causes the username and password to fail immediately after the banner. the trace file shows that this is caused by the username being entered at the password prompt Does this make sense?

Did you find a solution to your problem? I have exactly the same issue with the commander of an HP2900 stack.

The problem with what you have above is that the state machine continues to look for the virtual prompt you specified and doesn't expect a prompt change.

Try using this instead:

If that doesn't work, we'll need an NCM session trace to troubleshoot further
