In a previous post, I outlined a couple of steps you should take to ensure that you are best protected against "apocalyptic disaster" on your network. In short: * Get a Network Management Software (NMS) to keep track of network health. SolarWinds NPM network monitor is a great place to start for this. * Since that NMS is…
One of the biggest complaints I have with the Failover engine is the use of TCP Stack modification to suppress connectivity on the WAN link. A feature I would like to see would be using the built in "Clustering" capabilities of Server 2012 to create HA Clusters for Polling Engines. I believe this would greatly enhance the…
The network management system (NMS) is a key component of the network infrastructure which monitors your network health and identifies issues causing performance bottlenecks. This much we know already. But what will happen when the NMS is not available perhaps due to a failure in NMS implementation due to one of the…
Waking in the hospital after surgery, having lost both his legs in one of the bomb blasts last week in Boston, Jeff Bauman asked for pen and paper and with great effort wrote a note to communicate that a short time before the two explosions a man with a hooded sweatshirt had looked directly at him while dropping a bag.…
With all the natural disasters that have been making headlines, the last thing you want to be worried about is your office's communication network. Many businesses promise 99.9% up-time and (hopefully) make plans to ensure this during disasters. However, while we make plans for off-site back up, data recovery, electric…
We here at SolarWinds are continuously looking to improve our products in both functionality and user experience. Failover Engine (FoE) as you can imagine, doesn't get a tremendous amount of feedback from the Thwack community. This is because FoE is akin to the spare tire sitting in the trunk of your car. You hardly ever…
We are looking to implement the NPM FoE for Disaster Recovery. Which means the redundant NPM server or the FoE would be in a different geographic location (a separate Data Center). My question is after the failover occurs and the FoE assumes the identity of the primary server, is there a way to tell the FoE to use a new IP…
Instead of using failover engine, it would be must easier and more supportable to use Windows Failover clustering. This would provide the following benefits: - easier to setup and admin / similar to other windows server HA options - still supports local LAN or WAN (DR) scenarios - ability to have separate server names and…
We are looking at implementing the Orion Failover Engine within our environment to give us a HA solution. The question arose regarding upgrades. With this solution will I be able to upgrade for example NPM on my backup nodes and then cutover to them and then do the primary nodes?
