Coffee & THWACK: Happy International Coffee Day!

It’s 8:07 AM. You’ve just opened your laptop, and the first alert is already waiting.

Something’s down. The dashboard is red, messages are coming in, and before figuring out what happened, there’s one important first step…

Coffee.

A few sips, a few logs, and suddenly things start making sense again.

For many IT pros, coffee is there for the early starts, late-night deployments, unexpected incidents, and those “this will only take five minutes” tasks that somehow take two hours.

So, for International Coffee Day, we want to hear from you:

Log in, open Teams and am bombarded with a bunch of messages, "can you please join the call?!" I wasn't on call, so I knew it must be serious if they were this panicked. Long story short, after bunch of NFS mounts missing alerts and some cat /etc/fstab it looked like something overwrote the entries. I go to Ansible just to cross check a few playbook runs from the night before and yep someone chose the wrong inventory and did a full send on whatever AI generated playbook they came up with and didn't even bother to check the YAML, inventory, or VALIDATE after reboot/service restarts.. thank God for coffee!

Friday night, 11PM (waited for backups to finish), kicking off a 20TB file server migration using RichCopy with max threads.

Friday night, 11:05PM, check on file server migration, appears to be going swimmingly.

Friday night, 11:10PM, packing up to leave for the weekend and let RichCopy do its thang, one last peek at the destination storage to verify the data structure, and…there's nothing there. Check source storage, roughly 1/3 of the data has disappeared…no longer on the source storage, nothing on the destination storage.

Friday night, 11:15PM, PANIC!

Friday night, 11:20PM, discover copy/paste error in RichCopy, source and destination are the same. Data is gone.

Friday night, 11:25PM, start grinding beans…

On Tuesday a client (Hospital) read about Citrix Netscaler critical vulnerabilities and immediately powered off the 4 netscalers. No thoughts as to asking us first. We had patched them on the previous Sunday. Now no one could remote in. Not our staff, not the consultants, not anyone working from home.

Option 1 - Panic (not an option)

Option 2 - Yell at them (really wanted to but they are a client)

Option 3 - Travel to client site to connect and power them back up (No)

Option 4 - Explain in very simple terms how stupid they are and tell them to power them back on.

Took option 4 and made a coffee.
