Is Orion capable of monitoring Solaris zones from SNMP only on the global zone, or does SNMP have to be running in all the zones?
Only the global zone can be monitored via SNMP, this is a limitation of NET-SNMP, not of SolarWinds Orion.
Thanks for the help again aLTeReGo!!
Sorry to dig up this old thread but does anyone know if this is still true? We are attempting to monitor Solaris 11 zones but running into the same issue with net-snmp. If there is no way to install net-snmp on the zones, is there a workaround way to monitor the zones "through" the globals? Or has anyone had any success with any of the linux agents in Solaris? aLTeReGo shalinz
Unfortunately, the Linux agent does not work on Solaris at this time. We are however, working on an AIX Agent currently. In the future we may see an agent for Solaris or HP-UX.
Thanks for the quick response and the info!
Hope to see a Solaris agent in the future, it would alleviate some of the issues that I'm currently running into with monitoring these systems. Do you think it's possible to monitor these Solaris zones with modified perl scrips running on the globals that are configured to "jump" to the Solaris zone and pull stats (if that makes sense) or is ICMP our only option?
I dug around but did not see any way of configuring net-snmp on the zones themselves.
Certainly. Have you considered using the Nagios Script Monitor with either of the following?
Not yet, but we will definitely look into it, thanks!
Would these scripts/plugins need to be installed on the global or the non-global zones?
I would assume the Global Zone, but since I did not write the script and don't immediately have access to a Zones host, I cannot say for absolute certain.
Okay thanks, we're going to give this a try, I appreciate it!
