BGP numerical states?

I am trying to setup an alert email anytime BGP state changes. I'm using these two threads as guidelines: /">/ and

Basically I have two questions, 1) what is the numerical values of the states in the bgppeer table (I think 6 is established, but what is idle, active etc.) and 2) I have BGP peers that will be in active condition for weeks at a time due to not being turned up yet or provisioned on the other side. How can I differentiate these alerts versus bgp peers that do need to be monitored?

Hi,

I can answer your first question; using the MIB Browser, you can see the list of possible answers if they have numbers as states, they are:

BGP4-MIB:bgpPeerState

OID 1.3.6.1.2.1.15.3.1.2

Type INTEGER

Units

Access read-only

Status unknown

The BGP peer connection state.

Possible Values :

idle(1)

connect(2)

active(3)

opensent(4)

openconfirm(5)

established(6)

For the other question, I am unsure.

Why don't you just remove the pollers for these devices? Then they won't be alerted on.

The problem is I will have one device that is say 6 bgp neighbors, 2 might be in an active state for 9 weeks or more while the other 4 neighbors are currently established. If I remove the pollers for those devices I won't get any bgp status.
