Solarwind SNMP v2 polls more OID's then SNMP v3

Hello All, I am trying to understand why Sloarwinds SNMP v2 was able to poll around 400K OID's but SNMP v3 was doing 4k. From the first look of the configuration I see few snmp-server view BLOCK XXXXXX, not if this is the one blocking OID's. Please help me what needs to be check on a cisco router and will SNMP v2 and SNMP v3 polling records match?

v3 introduces stronger access controls, so you'll need to check your config on the router to see if it is restricted.

From memory, as I haven't done this for a long time... so, SNMP View defines what you can see so I'd start there and ensure it has access across all OIDs. The view must be associated to a Group which in turn is associated with a User.

Do you have any snmp-server view lines in your config, and what do they say?

I see few snmp-server view BLOCK iso, mib-2 and few other as included and atEntry, ipAddrEntry,ipNetToMediaEntry as excluded.

There are multiple factors that need to be considered when using OIDs. I don’t know your familiarity level with OIDs. My answer might be too basic and may not be the solution/answer to your problem.

1) As a whole, you will always pull more OID results for SNMPv2 vs. SNMPv3. Mathematically, there are more products that support SNMPv2 vs. SNMPv3. Devices that support SNMPv3 usually support v2 & v1 as well. SMNPv2 devices don’t pull SNMPv3, so SNMPv2 will naturally have more results for OIDs. 400K vs. 4K is a big gap and seems off though. Our gap isn’t that large.

2) Is your MIB Database current/up to date? When we’ve been short on finding a SNMPv3 OID, we’ve contacted product vendor and they supply a MIB file. We tell our SolarWinds representative of the need/file. They have us send them the info and/or fill out forms. A week or two later, SolarWinds releases a new MIB Database File we download and the required MIB is now there. We’ve updated MIB fairly recently add we can now see more OIDs.

3) Since you said “Cisco Router”, what type router is the router and what are you trying to monitor? Most Cisco stuff doesn’t really need OIDs unless you need something special. SolarWinds can monitor most of what you need for Cisco out of the box if you select the right items you need to monitor.

A) If it is a Catalyst, ISR, or Standard Cisco router, you can simply create a node in “Manage Nodes”, “Add Nodes”, set it for SNMPv3. Once that is done, you can access the node page and click on “List Resources” then select canned items you want to monitor.

If it is a Cisco ASA or the Cisco Nexus device, you can use “Insight” to gather info. You can do special stuff with CLI. For more info, you can look at the link below.

C) I’m not a fan of how SolarWinds integrates Cisco ASRs (XR & XE) platforms. I’ve had to use OIDs and do weird stuff for those devices because they are odd balls.

If you provide the Cisco Device Type ad Model Number maybe someone might be able to provide a clearer answer if what I posted doesn’t help.
