NPM SL250 license transfer to new server / environment

Hi All. We just freshly installed NPM to a new server and the database server is new as well. Nodes are already added to the new NPM, but we are only running on an evaluation license. We want to transfer the SL250 license from the old server to new server, and there are 111 nodes with 459 interfaces on the new environment. What will happen to the 459 interfaces after the transfer since it exceeded the 250 limit?

Hi there, 

Any interfaces that are above the license usage will be placed into a status called, helpfully, unlicensed. In this status, they will remain in the platform and historical data will be there but no further polling will take place, meaning no new data will come into the platform for them.

I'm not entirely sure how it decides which interfaces to put into this status, but an educated guess would tell me it would go down the interfaces table, ordered by interface ID, skip over the first 250 and then set the rest to unlicensed. 

My advice to you is to go through the platform first, and either unmanaged or stop polling interfaces before transferring the licenses, so that you have some control over what is polled after the transfer. I would recommend prioritising in this order:

1. Physical trunk interfaces on core devices
2. Physical trunk interfaces on other devices
3. Virtual trunk interfaces 
4. Server interfaces
5. Everything else
6. Null/Loopback interfaces (You should remove these wherever possible, as they will not give any useful monitoring information but WILL use a license)
