Where is ....

Forget my scripting incapabilities [I know it's not a word ] - that's a given but my biggest blocker and biggest frustration with using the SDK is 'where is...'

As in where is a particular field that allows me to

see the state
change the state
manipulate into a report
etc

For example, yesterday's woe was about (still is) finding where one can see what state a node is with regards to backup. Options are Yes, No, Never - despite spending several hours I don't have, I can't find it so gave up and resorted to the GUI and setting and/or un-setting a bunch at a time. Which in our environment typically means approx 100 at a time.

I have lots of ideas in my head that I want to use my fledgling knowledge of powershell and the SDK for, but my inability to find the relevant location of a node, property, field, etc simply consumes too much time - never mind the act of writing the script. Today's should be a reasonably straightforward challenge to identify a set of nodes that have been enabled for backup and disable them, but oh no, not for me. That field remains locked away from me.

So go on, what' your frustration around the SDK?

p.s. for the record I did find it: Cirrus.NCMNodeLicenseStatus but way too late.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Find functionality in SWQL Studio. To be fair, I that it's available at all (I'd be completely lost without it), but I that it doesn't have any further filters. Generally when I have a feature request, I'll put in directly in the GitHub issues list as an enhancement request. One of the reasons the SWQL Studio is hosted on GitHub is so that many developers, globally, can contributing their own updates.

TBF some of the logic of the data structures (especially regarding older portions of the platform) are difficult to comprehend (looking at you NodeId and CoreNodeId in the Cirrus and NCM tables).

For me, frequent use with it helped build familiarity. Asking questions in this forum, exploring some of the shared Custom Reports, and even looking into some of the scripts that others have shared helped me in the early days.

I am, by no means, and expert, but I do have at least a couple hundred hours devoted to exploring around in my own environments, which makes me sometimes feel like an expert.

Yes indeed and the approach above of 'ask and inspect/rip apart' is one I'm utilising, but like a lot of us (I guess) this SolarWinds gig is my side job. By trade I'm a network & firewall engineer and prior to that I was a field service engineer on any and all hardware... last time I really programmed was when I was unemployed and doing the equivalent of a compressed degree course in 9 months. Sadly they weren't offering a degree at the end of it, just the same knowledge.

Anyway, that was 36yrs ago now, and I still have the same feeling as I did then... I don't want to be a programmer.

As to expert, well have a little laugh then, as I am considered one of the2 SME's for SolarWinds in our 70k strong workforce, and in all honesty I know I'm barely scratching the surface and this is only with NPM, NCM, NTA and IPAM. And the other chap knows as much as I do about programming.

On the subject of the search, do you happen to know if it's possible to change the colours in use - as that light blue is really hard to read.

Dude - I hear you. I think the actually number of "monitoring engineers" (where that's your actual 'day job') is incredibly low. Be it with a SolarWinds solution or something else, monitoring has always felt like another and not "the reason I get a paycheck."

I was a Network Engineer who was handed SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor and told "Welcome to the team! Here's a thing we just bought. The POC is installed on this server. It's yours now. BTW - the rest of the team is OOF until next week. You'll do fine."

We can all relate one way or another at having another duty added to our list.

Insofar as the coloring, I agree, it could definitely be better. I'd raise it as an issue on GitHub (or see if it's already there and add your own comment). I (personally) know what you are talking about, but if you write up your own issue, definitely include a screenshot so that anyone who wants to work the issue knows exactly what you mean. That's the great part about the Orion SDK (at least in my opinion) - anyone, anywhere can help contribute to the project.
