Report with switch port configurations with descriptions containing xxx on particular nodes

I need to audit the configuration of all network interface ports at a specific site, where the interface configuration includes the description "example"

I am not sure where to start. I have no reports against switch configurations. I am not sure if it is even possible.

If I had a report of all network interface ports, and could limit that to particular nodes, it would be a great start where I could export to Excel and do some filtering.

Any ideas?

I think the easiest way is to use Network Configuration Manager to manage & monitor the configs on your network hardware. It records all the information about every port and its configuration. It's easy to run a report showing the data you need, and also easy to custom-build a new report that shows ONLY what you want. Plus it gathers the info automatically as often you wish, and also automatically reports changes to you via e-mail.

If the info is in the "show run", it gets recorded in NCM. Set your NCM to back up & manage your config changes at least daily. Or, set it up to do real time config change monitoring & notification, for impressive security control.

If you don't have NCM, use Solarwinds Switch Port Mapper, which is part of the Engineers Toolset. It can be configured to display a LOT of different variables that can be discovered via snmp.

If you have no Solarwinds tools that can do the job, or have no budget to get them, you can always try freeware like Switchport Miner. It works similarly to Solarwinds Switch Port Mapper. And sometimes you might find Miner can do things that Mapper may not; especially with Nexus hardware. Unfortunately, neither Miner, nor Mapper, can be set up to run automatically on a schedule (as far as I know). The preferred solution is NCM.
