Can ICMP packets' size be configurable?

Hy SolarWinds users,

 

I have Orion NPM installed and I was wondering if there is a way you can set up the size of the ICMP packets (for polling the nodes).As far as I know, the only thing that can be modified in the ICMP packets is the data portion (by default the data portion of an ICMP packet contains a text like "SolarWinds Orion Network Performance Monitor v9.x").

If not, is this an option to be consider for a future feature in the next Orion releases?

My question is why does this matter for regular up/down status polling???

If you're trying to troubleshoot MTU sizes through the network network or think a router is dropping packets because they are too big you could use a tool directed at this kind of testing like priviledged ping from a cisco router... or a ping sweep with a whole range of packets sizes to look for a packet size that gets dropped somewhere because they are not being fragmented.

From a cisco router in exec mode use the extended ping option and sweep the size range:

Extended commands [n]:	Specifies whether a series of additional commands appears.
Sweep range of sizes [n]:	Allows you to vary the sizes of the echo packets being sent. This capability is useful for determining the minimum sizes of the MTUs configured on the nodes along the path to the destination address. Packet fragmentation contributing to performance problems can then be reduced.
