Solarwinds agent getting too hungry!!

Can someone explain this?

restarting the solarwinds agent bring its back down to this

please dont tell me to change polling method the issue is the servers are spec'd out to do a task not then another 3rd of resource to monitor it.

Can I limit it somewhere or automate a service restart?

this is happening on about 20 servers that are close to the limits of the box's limits so is being highlighted.

Will probably be having this issue on other servers just not visable as they have more spec?

Can you provide a bit more information? Just to help elaborate and clarify a bit further.

1. What verision of NPM are you on? What's the version of the agent being used? I think there was a specific version (Can't remember the exact number) but it actually did have a memory leak of sorts that would cause this to happen.

2. Have you checked any of the agent logs on that server by chance? Some times they can lead you to the problems other times they might not provide enough. Either way it's worth a shot.

3. Do you notice this while polling for specific data, maybe if you have a sam monitor or a universal poller on it. Or is it just in general polling that causes this to happen?

There could be more than one variable that's contributing to this. It was once a pain point we had in our environment. But in our situation it was a combination of bad agent installs and also polling additional information that was causing the agent to misbehave a little.

Ultimately, I suggest opening a ticket with solarwinds as well. Just in case your unable to find an answer here.

1. latest version of NPM and agents

2. nothing on logs seems to working as expected

3. nothing specific just monitored over agents

could do with a way of limiting its memory usage or automating a service restart, which i may have to do with alerts

Dev's are aparently working on a patch: Solarwinds Service CPU Spike. The title is about CPU but like yourself I'm finding RAM is getting maxed out and server owners are just disabling the agent on their boxes so I'm looking forward to a fix ASAP. Another post also states devs are working on a fix: SolarWinds Agent using 2-3+ GB RAM

It may be a good defensive idea to put an alert on the agent process, with a restart action on the agent.
