Geographical Jurisdictions - How do you do it?

Hi All,

I'm going to take another swing at a problem I've been trying to solve on-and-off for a while.

We've got a large number of sites, covered by a number of local engineers and two teams (North and South). These jurisdictions don't go neatly above, below, left or right of straight lines of any sort.

I've got coordinates for where stuff is that could be supported by various engineers and teams.

I figure what I need next is to transfer a drawn map/google maps overlay into some sort of data table or set of boundary conditions.

Then write a script of some sort that checks the location coordinates for each node against that table or those conditions and assign a custom variable or two to each node for easier later use.

These problems in the abstract arent exactly new but i've not come across an easy method yet. Any suggestions? Any experience doing similar?

I would put all of the nodes for a jurisdiction in a group.  Then you can filter lots of things on that group.  Alerts, world map, etc.  Granted, it's usually not easy to filter things on group membership, but those can be more specific questions in another thread.

if I understand your boundaries correctly with the north/south, I would jumpstart the process with two straight lines.  For Example: Everything above 38 is north group, everything below 34 is south group, and everything in between goes in a group called "Gray area".  Then you manually sort through the gray area group.  Making those lines as close together as possible.

Or... if you are evil ... then you put the gray area nodes in both the north and south groups, and if the admins have rights to remove them, it will sort itself out.  You also automatically add any node not in a jurisdiction group to all groups once a day. Either 'someone' is getting alerts for this node ... or 'EVERYONE' will get alerts for this node... muhahahaha.
