Whats the difference between a standard and private MIB walk?

My guess is that standard refers to all RFC OIDs?? MY understanding of which is that these OID's high up the MIB tree should be supported on all devices (is this just where the vendor decides it'll support it? It's not mandatory?) then the private MIB walk is walking the tree below the point where it becomes proprietary? So what I take from that is we should probably see a lot of OIDs that'd be supported across many different machines on a standard MIB walk but this would not be the case for a private tree walk because these would have been developed by the vendor unilaterally?

For a bonus point is there any difference between an SNMPwalk and a MIB walk? 2 tools performing the same job named differently by Solarwinds?

Standard MIB Walk starts at .1

Private MIB Walk starts at the Private MIB of the vendor 1.3.6.1.4.1.

The MIB walk and the SNMPwalk both talk to the device to find every OID, and value regardless of without referencing the MIB files in the MIB Database. SNMPWalk we include in the Orion Core products for easier troubleshooting.

If you are looking to see all OIDs that the Device Supports and values returned, use Standard.

If you are looking only for the Vendor Specific OIDs, Values and MIB Names, use Private.

     Private would be best used when you know you need to setup custom polling on the same vendor for multiple models. Focusing on the Private removes the MIB standard noise that would show Chassis information, temperature, Fan data, or UPS information.
