Polling

Good morning,

I'm currently adding a lot of nodes from my network onto Orion that was given to us by a company we migrated with. It seems that not even halfway through adding them my polling engine revved up to 86%. I've since deleted some nodes, but my boss wants to look into getting another engine. I'm doing the math for a possible presentation. Right now I'm polling at 83% with 10,329 elements, if my math is correct by doing 10,329/.83 I'll be able to poll 12,444 at 100%. Does anyone know if there is a max limit for elemnts for one polling engine. Does it vary by polling interval and type of devices? Any insight is great, thanks.

Hello,

The maximum elements we consider to have in a polling engine is about 10,000 to 12,000 only.

12k elements per polling engine at standard polling frequencies:

- Node and interface up/down: 2 minutes/poll

- Node statistics: 10 minutes/poll

- Interface statistics: 9 minutes/poll

As rickrocks mentioned, the server has a "maximum" number of elements it can poll as the default polling intervals. You can increase the number of elements you monitor by changing the polling intervals (e.g. instead of 2 minutes for status, use 5 minutes. Instead of 10 minutes for statistics, use 15 minutes, etc). You might have your core network on different intervals to the rest of your network. However, if you want to keep your polling intervals the same you will need a new polling engine or start deleting objects.

Basically there are 3 options:

Deploy an additional polling engine
Modify your polling intervals
Delete elements from monitoring

Depending on what you're monitoring as well, you might be able to clean up some of those 10,000+ elements. For network devices, are you monitoring loopback and null interfaces? Are you monitoring every access port on a switch and if so, is this required or do you only need your trunks and other key interfaces? For Windows servers, if you are using SNMP make sure you are only monitoring the physical interface and not all of the other virtual interfaces within Windows.

Don't go for the percentage, look at the polling completion. If this is 99-100 you're good.

depending on your use case and polling intervals the number of maximum elements can vary a lot.

I have seen Orion instances with 3000 elements being hammered down by extreme low polling intervals and a lot of alerts configured.

On the other hand I have a Polling Engine running 26.000 Nodes just fine.

Set your polling intervals wisely don't overdo on alerting, maintain your SQL-box.
