Cisco 3560\3750 Version 3 SNMP\Traps

Hi Everyone,

We are in the process of switching from Version 2 SNMP to Version 3 for security reasons. I already have one Switch configured, and added to NMP via SNMP V3.

However we are having a terrible time getting V3 Traps to work. The Cisco device says it is sending them, but NPM is not showing any. If I put this command in: snmp-server host (IP Address) community (v3 name) it appears to work. However when we try it this way: snmp-server host (IP Address) version 3 auth (community name) nothing happens (Cisco still shows sending...but I never see anything at the other end).

If anyone can share their configs to get SNMPv3 working (particularly the Traps) that would be great.

We use MS SQL Server for Orion, which does not support SNMPv3.

What is that big fish in your avatar??

Correct me if i'm misunderstanding but SNMPv3 works fine for me & i'm using 3750's as well as other switches.

See below my attempt at explaining the necessary configuration.

snmp-server group *insert name of group* v3 auth read *insert read view name* access *insert access-list*

snmp-server view *insert name of view* *insert MIB view family name (e.g. Internet or system)* included (or excluded)

snmp-server community *insert SNMP community string* *insert type of access e.g. ro=read only & rw=read-write access* *insert access-list*

snmp-server trap-source *insert interface or vlan*

Then specify traps

snmp-server enable traps *cpu* (for example)

snmp-server group ExampleGroup v3 auth read ExampleView access 20

snmp-server view ExampleView internet included

Sorry, my mistake. Not SQL but the MS server trap receiver does not support SNMPv3 traps. SNMPv3 polling is OK. You can configure the device to send SNMPv3 traps but MS server OS won't handle them.
