Polling Through a Firewall

I apologize if this has been posted elsewhere.

I am wondering if it is possible to get polling working through a firewall without having to do a static translation and waste publics?

Currently, even though SNMP is polling just fine, to get a device to show as 'up' I have to create a static translation and allow ICMP...
