Updating Again...and bored.

How do fight the head nodding boredom that is a module install? Mine take between 50 minutes to an hour and a half per module.

Nope...Here is the configuration wizard.....and the longest part of the slog...

I am doing other installs on other systems at the same time but its no help.....boredom creeps in and I start nodding off again.

Great...five more modules to go.....plus various hot fixes and patches.

OK NPM VNQM and SAM have been updated with one HF and a patch.

Oh yeah, I also updated other stuff on a list I keep on 3 by 5 note cards.

Tomorrow I will tackle NCM, NTA, SRM, VIM and Vman.

last Update i did, took me a whole day (SAM, NCM,NPM and SRM).

And a week later the Orion Core Hotfix lasts 4 Hours ...

The longest part for me is the backing up of the database, but you are correct the actual update can take an hour. I multitask a lot.

I finished up NCM, NTA, SRM, VIM and Vman. Now I will double check to see if anything got missed.

Radioteacher Are you running the config wizard after EVERY module install/upgrade, or only after you have installed/upgraded X number of modules? I usually run it after the initial NPM upgrade, but once I start upgrading other modules, I just cancel that config wizard until they are all done installing/upgrading, then run the config wizard to finish it all up. I have not seen any issues doing things that way, however, I suppose every system is different.

My last upgrade to 12.1 took 9hrs. Decided to use the Orion Installation Wizard for the additional pollers (5 total). Only one completed successfully. The others required a call to Solarwinds support. NTA is what broke the installer otherwise the upgrade would have worked really well. Run the installer and it pulls from the Primary ORION server and installs the packages. It was a nightmare night...

The fix... GUT the POLLERS of all ORION and reinstall all ORION poller packages.

Oh wow!!! Well I guess I will just keep doing the way I had been doing it - downloading the APE install files and running them one by one.

Yes, update on main Poller 2 additional Poller and an additional Website and every time the configuration wizard.

This was really annoying, a hotfix lasts never so long before.

'We're actively working on it, blah, blah'. We have a LOT of full orion instances and some pretty big ones to boot. I'll just come right out and say it -the 'gutting' that needs to happen isn't in the APEs as gsibley says but IMO, in VERY close proximity to department filling the architect role of the orion installer. It's never been worth a damn and it's getting worse, I think. Latest upgrades from last year's platform to 2017.1 was so bad that across 4 instances it required 5 high priority tickets. And it's unstable as hell across at least NPM & NCM ever since. And these weren't software layered on software, etc, they were upgraded in place, DB backed up, all new well-spec'd virtual hardware, fresh installs, etc. Still a nightmare.

Back in the beginning the 'hook' for Orion was supposed to be ease of mgt / lower cost over the 'big guys'. What we have today absolutely doesn't feel like it and I've worked with most of the major players.

Very frustrating.

I recently rebuilt one of our instances which happened to be our biggest. It was a lengthy process and two support tickets later (very helpful folks by the way,) I was on my way and up and running. In total it probably took a couple days (whilst getting sidetracked and pulled away at various parts during lol.)

Running the config wizard I've found is a good cue to refill your coffee cup though....
