Monitoring Tomcat Service

Hi All

How can I monitor tomcat instance running as a linux service ?

I tried the SolarWinds Process Monitor (SNMP). I provided "java" as the process name but getting timed out.

Is there a monitor for tracking linux services ? Any work around possible ?

In the past what I have done is actually ignore monitoring the actual java process. I stacked about 10 tomcat instances per each of my web servers, each on their own port, which means that I'd have 10 java processes. Plus any other tool that also used java would also display as another java process. So seeing 10 java processes and then seeing 9 or 8 didn't actually tell me which one was down, so this wasn't too practical for me. I checked the individual port that each java process was listening on plus an HTTP check on the web page which verified a specific string. On top of that I monitored specific JMX metrics for each of those instances too. Ran like that for years and never had an confusion knowing which was up and which was down.

Why dont you write a script yourself to find out if process is running ? Embed that script into a Linux/Unix Script monitor component

Use Message and Statistics variable to get the status of the same from the script and use the same in your alerting

Is the node managed via SNMP? Can you click 'List Resources' from the 'Node Details' view and select items such as CPU & Memory? If so, you should also have another button in the same 'Management' resource on that page called the 'Real-Time Process Explorer'. You should be able to easily click the 'Start Monitoring' button next to any process to add it to a new or existing application template for monitoring.

Thanks Chad. It makes sense to have URL monitor rather than process. I already had URL monitor setup.
