How are you detecting new volumes?

Question

Just curious on how other SolarWinds customers are handling newly created volumes on a node?

The problem I'm having is that a new volume is created on a node and the server engineer is not remembering to add it to monitoring.

Anybody running any scripts in SolarWinds to alert on new volumes or by any other methods?

The problem is you are trying to report on data that isn't in the database. You could do some powershell/vbs script...or, you could have you company use a change control process where you would get notified if someone adds more disks to a server.

I actually have set up many clients to just not do volume monitoring the built in way and instead rely on scripts like this one from alexslv that just executes powershell to identify all the volumes on the server automatically.   There's usually a bit more leg work around building the process but that's a solid starting point.

Many, many threads on this, and its one of the most major headaches for us too .

People say to do discoveries but when you are dealing with 1500 nodes, this is not a clean option at all. Especially since you have no control over Windows credentials being blasted at all of these nodes in an incoherent way. We were locking out accounts trying this avenue.

Hopefully someday volume auto-magical discovery is baked into the product.

But, in 10 years when all resources are in the cloud, this will not matter since the destruction and creation of servers will be a daily thing, and thus static monolithic monitoring of ten year old hardware will no longer be needed.
