Hello!
I wasn't entirely sure where to put this question/problem, but from what I've gathered, SAM handles polling network topology for WMI monitored devices so I'm going to start here.
I have six servers in far off places that I'm trying to 'map' in Network Atlas. I wasn't involved in installing them, and I'm trying to go back and label everything in the switch configurations and in Orion, along with some general housekeeping. Most of the WMI nodes I'm monitoring in Orion are showing network topology - I have a number of Windows 7 machines that work just fine and report exactly what port on the switch they're plugged into, which made things a lot easier - but when I got to mapping these servers, only one of them shows the network topology. It labeled its own interface as 'unknown', which led me to think it's more that the switch provided the information through SNMP, rather than the computer providing the information through WMI. The other five show me some Netflow information (traffic utilization and conversation graphs) and that the interfaces are active, but otherwise I don't get any network information from them.
My question is, why are some WMI nodes showing me the network topology while others don't? I've gone through the 'list resources' and I seem to have the same things checked. I've also 'rediscovered' and 'polled now' to make sure it's not just a case of the information not having loaded yet, and I also confirmed that the user for the servers has admin access (and made it part of the local Distributed COM Users and Performance Log Users groups too, just to make sure). I've tried searching through thwack and through the admin guides (though again, I'm not sure which guide would really deal with this) but haven't had any look.
Can somebody who is a little more familiar with the WMI polling/network topology point me in the right direction? I'm pretty sure I'll run into other servers that are having this trouble too, and want to know how to straighten it out, or what specifically Orion needs in order to map the layer 2 topology for WMI nodes.
Thanks in advance.
