Temporary LIcense for testing disaster recovery

Hello,

I am using a 21 day test ipmonitor installation in order to test for disaster recovery. I did learn about restoring a lost server in this post - but it does not mention licensing.

The following looked promising - support.ipmonitor.com/.../866b127bf2da4f4d8b8c302e1aaae88d.aspx but I could not find a similar article for v9.05 and above.

I would be thankful if someone could help me understand how should I go about licensing a ipMonitor v9.05 installation that has been restored using a backup. Assuming that the original server suffered a failure that cannot be recovered from.

Parking the license is an option as long as the old installation is still available. Otherwise, you have 2 options depending on when the "disaster" occurs and how many Monitors you are licensed for.

-If the disaster occurs between Monday and Friday, simply contact the Solarwinds Customer Service department and they will reset your license.

-If the disaster occurs during the weekend and you have 1000 Monitors or less, simply let it run as a trial until Monday. At that point, contact the Solarwinds Customer Service department and they will reset your license.

-If the disaster occurs during the weekend and you have more than 1000 Monitors, you will need to generate an emergency license which is good for 7 days. In order to do this, login to https://ipmsupport.solarwinds.com/authd/myproducts.aspx, at the bottom, select the policy ID you wish to generate it for and click "Go". It will then ask you for your installation's site code. You can copy this from the "Software Licensing" section of the ipMonitor configuration utility. This will provide you with an extension code which you can paste using the "Indirect Method" of the Licensing Wizard. Once your installation is licensed temporarily, wait for Monday and contact the Solarwinds Customer Service department and they will reset your permanent license.

Hi Chris,

Thanks a lot for the information! I have a quick question that is unrelated to the previous one. I was having a look at the instructions specified here - support.solarwinds.com/.../ProblemDetail.cfm

What is the purpose of step 4. I tried moving my installation to a new system without the delete. I just installed ipMonitor over the old IpMonitor folder and retrieved the credentials fromt he backup file. It seems to work well. Is there anything more that I should do for the restore?

I can answer that one. This document has had a couple revisions in the past. At one point the restore program may not have correctly reset the credentials database. Apparently it does now.

Often a move procedure involves a slow migration to another box while the downtime gets scheduled. If the other box is new, and yet previously configured to do a few things -- the documentation specialist decided to leave step #4 in to set the expectation that any monitor & alerting passwords will be gone (in favor of the old set).

The only thing I can think of is to make sure your alerts work, but clicking the test button. Other than that, I think you're set.

Hi,

I have been able to successfully restore my monitors, credentials, etc. in my test installation.

We are interested in testing our DR plan without affecting the production installation. Since this involves greater than 1000 monitors, I have a few questions regarding the licensing part.

1. I have not been able to find instructions detailing the indirect licensing part that Chris suggested. Could you please provide me with some information on how to do that? I tried the instructions here - support.ipmonitor.com/.../866b127bf2da4f4d8b8c302e1aaae88d.aspx but the URL that I see does not have 'status'. Instead it has 'view&' and changing that to 'extend' or 'extend&' does not work.

2. Would it be possible for me to get a temporary license but not use it immediately and keep it for later use (in a DR situation) or is it valid for just 7 days after I get it from the support website?

3. Would it be possible for me to get a temporary license, restore the installation on a test box and then just let it expire without affecting the production installation or does getting a temporary license affect the original license in some way?
