Inconsistant HW monitoring for HP servers

Hello,

I have used SAM 5.0 to successfully monitor all of my dell servers by installing openmanage. However we have about 20 older HP Proliant DL380 G5s, these came with all the HP software installed originally. I am able to monitor about 15 of the 20 servers with SAM, the other 5 do not list 'Hardware Health of Servers' as a resource option. Also using HP MIB/OID pollers fail on those 5 servers.

When comparing the HP servers they all appear to have the same HP software and versions installed. On the server I am unable to monitor I have tried updating their firmware and rebooting to no avail.

I dont see why upgrading the HP software would fix it when 15 other servers are working, however I am willing to try (unless someone else has a suggestion). My issue is there are delicate production servers and the new version of HP SIM 7 requires you to install SP2 for win2003, .net framework, etc. And we are not comfortable doing that amount of system updates on these servers (servers that never get touched/changed). Does anyone know of a simple upgrade path, or a way to just upgrade certain components that may resolve this issue?

Your issue may be similar to this one where the user had incompatable SIM and HPIMA versions. Check the versions on working servers and non-working ones.

This is from the SAM Admin Guide, first page of Monitoring Hardware Health. If I'm not mistaken, the support pack is needed in situations such as yours. I've provided both links so you can experiment. Hope this helps!

I'm sorry to say kmook that upgrading to the latest version of HP's SIM agent is the most likely resolution. If you find that version isn't the culprit (ones that work vs those that don't share the same version) upgrading is still likely to fix the issue. Uninstalling and re-installing the agent software another option. The reason why this is likely to resolve the issue is that in most cases the HP SIM software was installed before SNMP was installed/enabled on the Windows server. Only during the installation of the SIM software are the HP MIBs registered with the operating system, and this is only if SNMP is already installed/enabled. If SNMP is installed/enabled after HP SIM then the MIBs never get registered.

The only possible alternative might be to install the WBEM providers Bronx linked to above and manage the node via WMI, but the best course of action would be to upgrade to the latest version of the SIM agent software. This has resolved +90% of all customer issues related to hardware health monitoring.

I know this is an old post, but I ran across it while researching a similar issue with a client and felt like I needed to add this in in case somebody else has a similar issue in the future. The HP Proliant Support Pack has not been updated by HP since 2012. They now include the files in their HP Service Pack for Proliant. The link in the SAM Admin Guide (and thus in Bronx's response above) does correctly link you to the Service Pack but I know I was thrown a little by it at first and did some research to confirm.
