Device - is it managed or not

I would like to create a report that shows which devices are being managed. Yes, some we just ping / discover, others are managed I believe if an Agent is installed. This is an assumption, please correct me if I am wrong.

Question 1: server: must have an agent installed to be managed? I'm using the status field from the database column Component/Status - this seems to give me Up, Down, Never status.

Question 2: how do you determine if a switch, router or firewall is managed? I'm shakier on this one ... don't have a clue.

Environment: I have SolarWinds 2019.4 - I have access to the Web-based report writer only.

You could download SWQL Studio and use that tool to create your query and then place it into a report. For example the query below will show all SNMP v2 nodes.

SELECT TOP 1000 IPAddress, Caption, Location, SNMPVersion
FROM Orion.Nodes
WHERE SNMPVersion = 2
Order by CAPTION ASC

Mr. Marley, are you stating that if I can find determine the SNMP version then I know it is managed?

I think this was meant as an example.
Do you refer by „managed or not“ to a device that is unmanaged or muted in the Orion system? There is a field in SWQL for unmanaged or muted.

Sir, on our NOC page it shows a widget that states a device is Manage or Unmanaged. I'm trying to tie this all together with End of Support dates. From what I understand we monitor a bunch of devices, but do not manage them. So I guess a ping to see if they are alive. An agent on a server or SNMP query to a Router or Switch would tell me if they are managed. This is a guess since I know so little. Also, I haven't been able to get a listing of tables and keys that make of the SolarWinds DB. Frustrating .. so it makes trying to use SWQL / SQL nearly impossible. That's why I say I'm stuck with the Dynamic Query Builder as my best option.

I will say that Mr. Marley's query did work ... just not sure what it proved.

Sorry to be such a "newbie" .. just need more help.

This is a little tricky as it depend on what your definition of "managed" is. When I node is in NPM, I assume it's managed as now you can be alerted as to it's up or down status. And if down, someone can do something about it.

Installing an agent or using SNMP basically enhances what you see about the node. Now potentially you can alert on more things then just up/down status. Such as CPU usage, hard drive usage etc.

Internally you will need to decide what you are seeing on your NOC screen as if it is "managed" or not. In other words, do you care if it went down or not. There isn't a report for that but one could be written if you know which nodes that are being monitored but you don't care (managed) about.
