Can delete node and add node processes be automated?

We would like to automate removal and addition of nodes as much as possible using a script based approach. Is there any way to do this without going to the web interface to complete the task? The add node process should include Name, IP Address, Polling Method settings and Custom Properties. I'm having a hard time finding much more than bare bones documentation on the seed file import process. Is this possible and has anyone done it?

Some of our SP customers do this using the Orion SDK. You need pretty good programming skills to implement it.

That's good for them, but why make every customer reinvent the wheel to get this done? Everything is known about the node; Name, IP Address, SNMP version and community names, OID, Custom Properties, etc., and can be input to a batch process that creates the node. We're trying to streamline processes to save people time and this is one that we'd like to automate.

You are absolutely right that there should be a way to bulk import these. Unfortunately, the only way to do this today is to use the method Andy described. If you do create a generic script for this, I encourage you to share with the community so that other people won't have to go through this same pain. Long term, we would like to build it in to the product, but that won't help you today.

Hi Andy,

We're just now looking at the SDK for deleting, updating, adding nodes/custom properties, etc. Has anyone posted any scripts to do this yet? If not, once we get one working I'll post it - will probably be VBScript.
