Upgrading questions

Hi,

I plan to upgrade my NPM to version 12. Would like to check do I need to upgrade the Orion platform before I can upgrade the NPM or I only need upgrade NPM?

Below is the module I have.

Orion Platform 2013.2.1

SAM 6.0.2

IPAM 4.1

NCM 7.2.2

NPM 10.6.1

NTA 4.0.1

UDT 3.0.2

IVIM 1.9.0

VNQM 4.1

If I upgrade NPM, do I need to upgrade others module as well or they can remain current version?

Please give some advise. Thank you very much in advance.

Found a site call SolarWinds Product Upgrade Advisor. Insert my module and found the recommended installation steps. It recommended me to upgrade my server OS to either MS Windows Server 2012 or MS Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

Currently I am using MS Windows Server 2008 R2. Is it still possible to upgrade the Orion module without upgrade the OS ?

You're going to need to upgrade all of the modules (and with a lot of step-upgrades) to get to the latest version. Did the Product Upgrade Advisor spit out the steps (if you deselect the server OS)? I input your versions and it said it was too complex! I can probably work it out manually if it didn't provide a path. Orion and IVIM will update automatically as you install the other modules (i.e. upgrading NPM will also upgrade the Orion Platform version).

NPM 12.0.x is not supported on Windows Server 2008 R2 without SP1 (NPM 12.0.1 Release Notes - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support ). You should be able to upgrade to NPM 12.0.1 (and equivalent modules) if you install the service pack for 2008 R2 SP1.

The newest versions currently in release candidate (RC) no longer supports Windows Server 2008 R2 at all and SolarWinds recommend upgrading to Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2 or 2016. (See: NPM 12.1 Release Notes - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support ).

I went through the compatibility charts (NPM product compatibility chart - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support ) and came up with the following upgrade as the advisor couldn't make a path. You might be able to skip a couple of these steps but the below path should work. This will get you to the latest versions not including the new release candidates with PerfStack.

You can also contact SolarWinds support and they will be able to assist you as well.

Upgrade SAM to 6.1.1
Upgrade NPM to 11.5.3
Upgrade SAM to 6.2.3
Upgrade NCM to 7.4.1
Upgrade NTA to 4.1.2

Upgrade UDT to 3.2.3
Upgrade VNQM to 4.2.3 (stop here if you haven't upgraded to Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1)

Hope that helps. The other option to consider is starting a new install and starting fresh (i.e. new database, new server, add all your monitored elements, etc).

SQL Server 2008 R2 is supported for the current full release versions of SolarWinds (e.g. up to NPM 12.0.1).

However, the new module release candidates (NPM 12.1, SAM 6.4, etc) deprecate support for SQL 2008 or 2008 R2 and future releases will not support those versions. Check out the End of Support section in this link: NPM 12.1 Release Notes - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support

Some thoughts being I just did a 10 hour straight upgrade. You upgrade the core when you upgrade NPM if I am not mistaken. Additionally you upgrade to NPM 12 first, then some set of other applications then NPM 12.0.1. My sequence was as follows:

Misprint above, 19 straight hours it took to upgrade 8 pollers/1 web/1 database Orion set of servers.

Envision having to run through the configuration wizard for EACH Poller for EACH product. FYI, do NOT run the web optimization portion of the configuration wizard if you have multiple pollers until the LAST poller, rant over.....

Below are the steps I will perform. Kindly advise me if there any steps I have missed ?

1. Backup webserver and database

2. Stop services

3. Upgrade NPM and SAM

4. Start service

If you log into your customer portal, under the License Management menu at the top, click on My Downloads. Select the product (NPM / SAM) and license, then in the downloads section you should have the option to download the older versions in the dropdown menu.

Roughly for the steps;

1. Backup database and snapshot SolarWinds VM (or backup server if it isn't a VM)

2. Follow upgrade path as per Product Upgrade Advisor (skip the Optimize Website step in the Configuration Wizard until the last upgrade)

The services should stop/start during the installation. Contact Support if you have any issues.
