CustomPoller Alert

Hi, I am trying to alert on cisco nodes once the temperature reaches a warning level, for testing purposes I have set it so it will alert on any node above 40°C.

Now, I am including the first part of the trigger to be able to send a CustomPoller.Status in the alert email which would include the actual temperature of the device (I set it to trigger on 40° so I would only get a few alarms).

Now, this alarm doesn't work, is this just simply not possible or am I doing something wrong?

works like a charm we modified it a bit so we could use the OID instead of assignmentname.

If you change the OID you can return the status value of any other poller assigned to that node... you just have to make sure that the device the alarm is triggered on actually has the poller you want to get the status from assigned.

If you are just triggering on temp over 40 why is there a second part to the Trigger?

Well, actually I only want to "trigger" on the second trigger, which triggers once the TempStatus is "Warning" or higher (in this case I set it to fire even in "OK").

The first "trigger" I would set to trigger even on 0 degrees so iw would always be true. I did that, thinking that you would be able to request the Status value of the first CustomPoller you would be pulling data from.

Ergo, I want to trigger once a node temp has reached the "warning" state pulled from the custompoller but in the notification email I want to include the actual temperature on the device...

Firstly, do you actually have the data-collection for this setup with the Universal Device Poller (UnDP)?

Secondly, why not simplify the alert by calling out the poller by name in the alert?

I didn't mean to suggest that using the OID is a problem, it shouldn't be.

I would start by simplifying the alert to be just the basic conditions necessary to trigger, in this case I think that would be the OID & Trigger Threshold of the value. See if that works.

My thinking is by looking for two different OID's as part of an AND statement may be turning up a false result.

Once you have the basics working you can add on to it from there to determine which piece is breaking it. Also, even with just the basics you should still be able to get the variables you need in the email that you send; at least that has been my experience.

both alarms separately work just fine... the thing is i want to alarm on the second but get the status from the first....

If you actually look at the SQL statements that are generated for the alert, you are not going to get the response you are looking for.

The best thing to do is to remove the first part of your alert: OID is equal to 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.13.1.3.1.3, status is greater than or equal to 40.

I'm assuming the remaining portion of the trigger will create the alert you need.

If you were running 9.5 +,

in the alert actions, you could write a custom sql expression to give you the temperature.

Something along the lines of

Device Temperature is : ${SQL: select a.status

from custompollerstatus a

inner join custompollerassignment b on a.custompollerassignmentid=b.custompollerassignmentid

where b.nodeid = ${NodeId} and b.assignmentname='name of your custompoller'}
