Computer Explorer, Windows Firewall and TCP ports

We have just implemented the Windows Firewall internally and it has blocked my ability to use the Computer Explorer.

I now get access denied errors. I need to find out the port requirements this.

I did find this article SolarWinds Knowledge Base :: Troubleshooting "Access Denied" Errors in Patch Manager which is quite useful, but the hyperlink in this document for the "Eminentware Components, Commmunications, and Required Ports" is broken. Has anyone got the correct link for this document?

Here's a list of ports from page 7 of http://www.solarwinds.com/documentation/patchman/docs/PatchManagerAdministratorGuide.pdf

Server and console components use port 4092 TCP

Servers communicate with managed computers using the following ports:

• 135 TCP

• 445 TCP

• Dynamic ports 1024 to 65536 (varies by operating system)

The Patch Manager web console server uses the following ports:

• 8787 TCP

• 17777 TCP

Starting on page 8 you'll find some more detailed information about how the ports are used.

More specifically, the Computer Explorer requires Windows Management Instrumentation (which is the reference to the dynamic ports 1024-65536).

The way to enable this is through the "Windows Management Instrumentation" rules in the Advanced Firewall configuration, rather than trying to create rules (which is what the AdminGuide sort of suggests).

These rules are disabled by default in Windows Vista and later (go figger), but are enabled by default in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.
