Alert for file count monitor

Hi All,

Is it possible to pull in the file count information in to an alert ? we have a file count monitor that warns when it hits greater than 25 and alerts as critical at gretater than 30, i need to be able to pull the actual file count number in to an alert email such as if it hits 27

any ideas how to achive this ?

Hi Hans,

Are you using the PowerShell file monitors or the WMI ones?

The PowerShell ones, should return the file count as a statistic, you just need to pull this into the alert email.

The File Count Monitor (WMI) I don't think stores the actual number for files (checking on my own environment anyway).

Very easy to rectify, just add a new PowerShell script monitor and use something like:

$files = gci \\server\path\path\*.inv #edit the path,edit or remove the file type to suit.

$tmp = $files | Measure-Object

$errors = $tmp.Count

$threshold = 1500

If ($errors -ge $threshold)

{

Write-Host "Message: There are $errors files, which is more than the $threshold threshold."

Write-Host "Statistic: $($errors)"

}

Else

{

Write-Host "Statistic: $($errors)"

Write-Host "Message: There are $errors files, which is less than the $threshold threshold."

script works great and when i run on the test it outputs exactly what i want question now is how do i get the output in to the alert email?

Hi Hans,

From the alert you configured, go and edit your alert email message body.

1. Change the "Output preview shows the current values on specific test object:" so that it points at the application you are working on (search by hostname or application name).

2. Using the top Search tool, type in statistic, this will return every variable with Statistic in its name. Scroll on down and look for Statistic Data (Component Alerting Properties), this hopefully will be displaying the actual value, and insert into your email. Wrap some text around to give the number some explanation such as

Files found in folder = ${N=SwisEntity;M=ComponentAlert.StatisticData}

Follow through the edit alert to very end and that's it setup.

Feel free to have good dig around and see what other variables are available, and remember to set the output result, it makes things much easier to find.

yaquaholic, I needed to use this on about a dozen servers so I passed the ${IP} parameter to it. In addition, I needed to put "" around the path and check the "run the script under specified account" to get it to run. Great little script! Thanks! Dave B
