NCM 7.0.2 install help

Hey everyone, we are in the middle of a two day migration of our orion suite to new server infrastructure,

We are installing a new module NCM 7.0.2.

We have corporate sql 2005 clusters, and the dba team have pre-created us a blank NCM database, with new login with db_owner rights,

The new type installation, allows you to either create or use existing db. Existing meaning we already have the db schema>?

support just keep saying allow the wizard to create the db - which we cant as we have a corporate team who create/modify databases.

I have checked all the temp install drives- and this install seems that the db schema files are no longer visiable to use.

I need to get a NCM 7.0.2 db schema create file (sql 2005) if someone could help me?

Hi Mez,

When you install/upgrade NCM, the wizard asks you whether you want to create new databases or use existing ones -- just as you mentioned. It means the following:

• Create new db -- an empty db will be created, i.e. when you complete the installation and run NCM, you will see no devices and will have to e.g. discover them.
• Use existing db -- this allows you to use an existing NCM/Core db. When you run NCM after the installation, you will see all the devices and configs that are in the db(s). This is especially useful if you want to upgrate/migrate/re-install NCM application but want to keep all the data in the db.

You also need to know that NCM uses two databases -- 'Core' and 'NCM'. (You may also see 'SolarWinds Platform' or even 'Orion Platform' terms used as synonym for 'Core'.) It uses the Core db to store basic information about discovered nodes. (This information is used by other products, too -- e.g. NPM.) The 'NCM db' stores NCM-specific data, e.g. downloaded configurations, inventory data etc. These two databases are independent and different SQL servers may be used for them. (That means you also have two set of credentials for NCM databases.)

If I understand you correctly, you alredy have some Orion products (e.g. NPM?), you are migrating them to a new server infrastructure and you want to add NCM at the same time. (And have NCM integrated with the rest.) That means you will probably want to keep your existing Core db and use it for NCM as well. Then you need to add the NCM-specific db. You said your dba provided you with credentials for that (i.e. SQL serever hostname/IP and login and password). Then you will tell the installation wizard to use an existing NCM db and use these.

Please note that during NCM installation, first there is NCM config wizard and then Core config wizard. I strongly suggest reading chapter 2 of the http://www.solarwinds.net/support/orionNCM/docs/OrionNCMAdministratorGuide.pdf.
