Can APM identify and restart a hung windows service?

Hi Everyone,

Last year I trialled a product for monitoring our Exchange enviroment and one of the features that the product had was to alert me if a Windows Service was hung. Does anyone know if APM 5 can do the same? If yes could you help teaching me how to set it up?

I am not sure how likely it is for a service to hang, but it seems to be it would be worth identifying and take an action on it.

If you can think of a way to determine that a service is hung, sure. Create a template with a component that watches for that particular symptom (e.g., port 25 no longer responding to connections) and then restart the service with an action. If you trialed a product that claimed to be able to tell if a service was hung it probably had some specific criteria for that hung service in mind already. If you can reproduce it in SAM, it can behave the same way.

I have actually just been asked if i can help with an old SQL 2000 server that looses MAPI connection and then dont re-establish it when the connection comes back. you have to restart the SQL service and then things start working again.

Any idea if i can set something up that monitor for non responsive mapi connection and if found then restart a service?

I am fairly new at this so help would be greatly appreciated.

You can restart a service with an alert action. Check out this section of the SAM Admin Guide. Hope this helps!

The section references is definitely the ticket for restarting the service, but determining that the MAPI connection is unhappy may be more complicated. Is the issue that the SQL 2000 system can't talk to the Exchange server or that the Exchange server stops accepting MAPI connections entirely? If it's the latter, SAM's MAPI user experience component might be the ticket. If not, we'll have to go with a remote-run PowerShell script that can be executed from the remote perspective.
