Storage devices monitoring

Dear All,

We have a challenge where certain vendor devices are not supported by SRM. How these storage devices from EMC DD, Acronis,commvault,avamar,etc. can be monitored.

If any other parameters needs to be monitored what is the possible ways to do it.

Hello.

As suggested by KMSigma you could create a feature request to ask for certain devices being supported by SolarWinds' Storage Resource Monitor.

So there is no DIY method to monitor unsupported arrays in SRM. If you aren't on the supported list then you just have to vote up feature requests until the SRM devs get a chance to try to add your array.

Depending on the details of what you are trying to do and what the array supports it COULD be possible to roll your own monitoring with SAM/NPM.

NPM provides UNDP pollers for custom SNMP based monitoring, but most modern arrays don't give you anything juicy in SNMP so it has a very limited application.

In SAM you can basically use script based monitors to track anything you want, as long as you know how to write a powershell/*nix script to interact with the API/SMI-S of the array you want to do.

Obviously all of those solutions are going to be very custom and unsupported and would require you to have a pretty extensive understanding of how your arrays talk to outside tools. Not a project for the faint of heart.

Thank you very much for sharing your inputs. Just thinking if the unsupported storage device can't be monitored via SRM. If it supports SNMP, then if they send SNMP traps to solarwinds for any issues in storage device. I think we would be able to monitor any kind of hardware or software parameters the same. Correct me if I am wrong here.

Potentially, but I'm pretty sure inbound SNMP traps are a feature of NPM, assuming you have that module you'd need to add all your array controllers as Nodes there for this trick to work

EMC Data Domain is on SRM roadmap:

What we are working on for SRM after v6.8 -- Updated on March 14, 2019

"Acronis,commvault,avamar" are backup software solutions so are not in the scope of SRM.

I have NPM & SAM . Can i monitor the data domain devices like Dell EMC VxRail & Avamar? What parameters we can monitor in solarwinds for these these data domains?
