Virtual Appliance Authentication

Hi All,

Does anyone know if there is a way of setting up authentication on the LEM virtual appliance? At the moment the appliance boots up into BSD but allows access to the advanced configuration without any authentication measures.

Hey Matt,

There's no limitation on the virtual console at this time, though there is a password required to access the same thing via SSH (and you can whitelist SSH access). The simplest thing to do, which is what a lot of people are doing, is to limit who can access the VM/console in the first place.

Barring that, we'd have to add an option to require password on the virtual console, too (it used to be this way, but we found that communicating the default password was difficult and caused a lot of confusion - and since you have physical access to the VM, the password is a bit of a formality, but it is a nice convenient barrier).

Thanks for the reply, the VM console is accessible by several administrators as they monitor and VM infrastructure. In the interest of security and confidentiality there is only myself and my manager with access to the appliance which we would like to restrict by a means of appliance\OS logon if possible.

Got it. It sounds like a feature for enabling the same logon requirements at the VM console as we have for SSH access would be useful. The only danger is forgetting that password, but support can always help you change it in case something happens.

This is correct, in some organisations VM infrastructure is administered by a dedicated member of staff (VSphere, ESXI Hypervisor and VCenter etc). In our situation this allows the VM administrator full access tot he host which we don't want to allow, ideally they can administer the VM infrastructure but cannot access the underlying OS in this case then LEM.
