Business Justification & Problem Statement
Many enterprise organizations are consolidating their containerized workloads and legacy Virtual Machines (VMs) onto Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization (KubeVirt) to unify infrastructure management and reduce virtualization licensing overhead.
Currently, SolarWinds Platform (NMS/Orion legacy modules) and SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted depend on running Windows Server operating systems for application/polling servers, along with Microsoft SQL Server backends. While these operating systems run as VMs, enterprise customers require official support and vendor validation when hosting these VMs on OpenShift Virtualization (KubeVirt) instead of traditional ESXi or Hyper-V hypervisors.
Primary Requirements
- SolarWinds Platform Support on OCP-Virt:
- Validate and support deployment of SolarWinds Platform components (Main Polling Engine, Additional Polling Engines (APEs), Additional Web Servers (AWS)) as Windows VMs running inside OpenShift Virtualization.
- Validate SQL Server database performance (or containerized SQL Server on Linux) hosted on or connected via OpenShift persistent storage.
- SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted Validation:
- Fully test, validate, and document deployment architectures for SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted running on OCP-Virt.
- Ensure feature parity with bare-metal and standard hypervisor deployments (ESXi/Hyper-V/Nutanix AHV).
If Solarwinds products have no dependency Hypervisor , then include Red Hat Openshift Virtualization as a supported hypervisor in all documentation where it is applicable.
