
Sandbox games have been around for over a decade, and The Sims became a true heavyweight that captured countless hours of your youth. Remember the feeling of elation and surprise the first time you saw your Sims rub their feet on the rug and give each other static shocks? Can you still hear the sinister music of the approaching Racoon?
Looking back, you might wonder what this has to do with ITSM. But if you think about it, the world of the Sims and the role ITSM plays aren’t all that different. They both lend themselves to creating outside-the-box scenarios which both amaze and enhance the way you interact. Seldom were you forced to only play the game bound by one set of rules. The more you played, the more you discovered there were many paths to take. Taking the sandbox and having the freedom of customizing your experience as a player was both addicting and empowering.
With ITSM, you also have the freedom to innovate and shape how your environment operates outside the traditional boundaries of just the IT department. We like to think ITSM does everything but the kitchen sink. Flexible to suit the needs of multiple departments, it provides services and automates workflows. In one instance HR can use for onboarding or automating services as mundane as assigning a new office chair. The days of playing with your Sims in a sandbox may be only a fond memory, but as an IT professional, today’s sandbox is more flexible than ever. Don’t be afraid to take ITSM beyond IT in this month’s mission.
