SolarWinds 2016 Head Geek IT Pro-dictions

Hello Geek Speakers,

As 2015 comes to an end and 2016 begins, SolarWinds once again tapped its band of experts - the Head Geeks - to take a look inside their crystal balls and provide a glimpse into IT trends to watch for in the coming year. Will their predictions come to fruition in 2016? Let us know what you think and don't forget to revisit last years Prodictions to see where the Head Geeks were right or wrong.

Haha, I have bad vision too!. I'm pretty sure it's due to staring my laptop all day at work. I recommend expanding the slide share to full screen...it does wonders.

It will have to be stellar , super charged with caffeine for the late night sysadmin, mellow but tasty, and available in beans or ground.

Now you're just being picky... but really we would need a few blends..

House - slightly amped - for your basic mornings, because Geek Brains have massive components that take longer to resurrect - like old electronics with Tube's

Amped Breakfast Blend - Either for those Monday Mornings when you need an extra Jolt! or the day after your Email has been blowing up your phone with alerts Triage! - A Nice Brisk blend with smooth and mellowing overtones

Midnight Dark Roast - Super Amped/supersaturated caffeine content (I want some Coffee with my Caffeine), for either that Late Night Refresh or 'The World is Falling Apart at 3AM' alert that will have you reaching for caffeine by the spoonful!

Possible Time Release Caffeine Capsules for use over the weekend - time release to prevent jitters - caffeine content to prevent unduly bludgeoning some poor chap who got in your way

*I may be missing a blend or two*

I felt everything was very serious, no talk of Thwack contests, or all the MVP's. I say we revolt. Besides its to early to read about 2016, its not even here yet.

I agree with some of the predictions, others are too iffy in my opinion to nail down right now.

adatole‌ - I do think healthcare is an area security will have to become a major focus. Between digital filing, images, and sharing of information, it's a scary prospect. Security is huge in my industry and I'm not really sure what the medicos will do. I do know that their regs are much less strict than ours and it may take a major hit/loss for them to realize how easily their data can be compromised.

patrick.hubbard‌ - I have been waiting for a major cloud vendor to get hit. It's a matter of time. My biggest worry will be what type of data inside that vendor will be compromised. Working in the financial industry and under heavy regulation as well as being a HUGE control freak, I don't like my data where I can't "see" it. Do I too tightly control sometimes? Sure I do. But I think ultimately my customers' data can never bee too protected!

kong.yang‌ - I don't know about containers. You may be right, but we are still young enough in our virtual revolution I think anything can happen. Yes the technology concept is "old" in the IT space-time continuum, but there is so much emerging technology every year furthering the virtualization of virtualization that who can predict reality any more. To the DevOps, you could be right. In a company my size I can see the benefit, but practically, several of us do the job without it being defined as such.

Finally to sqlrockstar‌ - I think I very much agree with Software Defined Everything. Analytics are driving everything. The more data we (industries and consumers) produce, the more we crave the ability to act on that data and in quicker timeframes. Everyone expects more from technology every day, and with the right people and budget, there's not much we can't do anymore. Case in point -

---Story time: I got frustrated the other day because all I wanted was for AT&T to send me text alerts about billing and account information to my cell phone and not my daughter's. My employer pays for my cell, so it's not on my personal plan. Since my number is not on that plan, they can't send me that data. This to me was inexcusable. Of course the poor lady on the phone didn't make the rule or write the application she was using. I bid her good day and just smiled and said, "well #@$%". lol.--- Am I babbling? Nope, must be encrypted. haha.

For anyone still reading, those are my two cents and they're not worth even that much. Can't wait to see the technological ride forthcoming in 2016.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. Regarding the security aspect, I'm not sure how much MORE of a hit the medical industry needs to get before they take it seriously as a whole. There have already been so many major (meaning significant in terms of numbers), high profile, successful breaches on targets that would otherwise be assumed to be bastions of good security (except by those in the know on the inside). Anthem, OPM, Walgreens, and more. You'd think that would be wake up call enough.

#10 Rise of the Monitoring engineer.... Well that is 1/2 my job already. Our company realized the automation and alerting was saving the company significant time and money and this needed to be expanded. I very much agree with you and my company is a good example.

My title is Enterprise Systems Management Architect (along with NOC Engineer III) and my co-worker is Enterprise Systems Management Engineer (and NOC Engineer II). The titles were meant to reflect our focus on managing (or monitoring) the enterprise systems. They didn't like the word monitoring since it sounded too simple, we don't just monitor, we automate repairs, we alert and escalate and we educate with our descriptions in our alerts and notifications, in other words we manage the systems in an operational sense. My team (T&A) Tools and Automation becomes a central focal point for the enterprise IT infrastructure and we should know everything that is going on....

If I only had the time :-)

kong.yang‌ The drum beat of DevOps continues to get louder as more folks begin to see its value.

patrick.hubbard‌ I thought 2015 would bring a serious cloud data breach, its only a matter of time. We have already started to see a slow migration away from an IT only organization. The days of being able to treat IT as an isolated entity have been numbered for several years.

adatole‌ Health data encryption is just another dataset that will be lumped into the great government vs sanity. Where government wants to have the ability to decrypt anything but has a history of being unable to police or protect its citizens from itself. The need for specific monitoring skills has also been here for a while,

Everyone always misses the obvious, lightly roasted always has more caffeine... Dark has more "flavor" but less caffeine...

Well, to a point.. How do you "measure" your coffee to brew it? With a scale? With a scoop?

If you measure your coffee by scoops, light roasted coffee will have more caffeine. Since the beans are denser than a darker roast. However if you weigh out your scoops, darker roasts will have more caffeine, because there is less mass. There is an estimated ninety bean difference between a pound of dark and light roast coffee, with the dark roast winning the count.
