One of the guys in my department came up with this idea and I thought it was worth submitting...
Today we have an option on the Active Alerts List webpage to "CLEAR TRIGGERED INSTANCE OF ALERT". When used, it simply removes the Alert from the All Active Alerts list and as soon as the Alert Definition realizes the situation still exists, it re-triggers causing the Alert Actions to repeat and the Alert to again appear on the All Active Alerts list.
There are situations where this has come in handy, like when a situation truly no longer exists but the Alert did not Reset. There are several conditions that could cause this. However I think the name of the option should be changed to simply "Clear Alert from List" because that is all it really does.
What we are looking for is an option that truly does what the existing option's name implies. That is to cause the Alert to be removed from the All Active Alerts list but suppress the re-trigger until after the object that caused the Alert has met the Reset conditions.
Some might argue that you can ACK the Alert to accomplish, basically, the same thing but it still remains on the list.
As an example, let's say that one of two power supplies in a server has stopped working and the server Team has ordered a new power supply. Until that new power supply is inserted and powered up, the Alert would normally stay active. However, the Server Team wants to take action against that Alert so two things happen. One, the Alert is removed from the Active Alerts List so that our Help Desk is not seeing it as something that still needs attention and two, once removed from the list, it does not again appear because it re-triggers under the same triggered instance. Instead, after the new power supply is inserted, Orion recognized the problem is resolved and now, the next time a problem happens with that power supply, the Alert Definition can trigger a new Alert.
This would leave the Help Desk with a view of Active Alerts that have not been addressed, un-ACK'd, or that are being addressed but a resolution has not been discovered.
If this were to become an added feature, the All Active Alerts list should also included an option under "More" and similar to "Hide acknowledged alerts". In fact, my opinion is that there should also be an ability to hide un-acknowledged alerts as well.
