Here is another idea I'm sharing.

Most recently I was trying to create a report to give me a list of every interface that is an access interface type. So basically interfaces that are for the users, printers, etc. We wanted to consolidate all this to a report so that we could print a list and take all these interfaces out of monitoring as it is not important to us.

Here is the challenge. Web Report writer does not have a variable for interface type. If you open up the interface in manage nodes, you can see which type of interface it is. So I know it's saved on the database. It should be a variable we could use for reporting too. I've called support and they mention to open this as a feature request, telling us the report we need is not possible unless you put together a SQL query for the report.

Both reporting and alerting have always been high level. Just so solarwinds can say they have the feature. But when you need to integrate other teams and third party software, it shows how some parts of the software does not live up to it's full potential to deliver as compared to other software.

I'm hoping this feature request can be considered.

Granularity would be a great enhancement.

For example. Currently, I'm trying to put together a report for one server that gives me an inventory of everything that is being monitored on that server. I can't do it because everything is categorized separately. cpu reports, memory reports, etc. But no way to take all this and put on one report other than completing this with a sql query.

Trying to make things easier not only for me but everyone else if this feature is considered and implemented.

The report writer is weak. The web reporter is lacking. I'm wondering how people get reports done in solarwinds. The basics of reporting is not there. I was trying to build a very simple interface availability report. Couldn't do it. Even with the help of my sql admin I couldn't get it done. First there isn't a time stamp column that is common across all tables. Second there isn't an accurate availability column wither. Availability showed as either 100% or 0%. Which means that the information is not being written as expected. Spending days and days and hours with a sql admin dismantling the database just to find the data we need isn't a way to write reports. Shouldn't be like pulling teeth to get the information we need.

This is why I'm opening so many feature requests. Things so simple as report writing and alerting should be strong points and not weakness in the software.

I'm also exploring finding third part reporting tools that can tie in to solarwinds through api, etc. We are getting fed up really with inability to get what we need from solarwinds software. We invested in it but may have to switch to something better. It just isn't meeting our needs.

But for now we'll wait and see if solarwinds picks up any of these feature requests.
