WinRM has the added security benefit of being more controllable using Just Enough Administration (JEA) vs granting SolarWinds full control of all servers via WMI or Agent.
Don't get me started on SNMP ; )
It's already being worked on.
Just be glad we have the agent... I remember when we didn't have that. It's been great for linux! I'm not sure what the issue with the agent would be? It's pretty secure.
The good news is that we're starting down this path already as @mesverrum mentioned! Watch this https://thwack.solarwinds.com/t5/Server-Application-Monitor-SAM/WS-Manangement-WinRM-Support-for-Application-Monitors/idi-p/543270 feature request for updates
SAM now has the ability to poll with WinRM. (Thank you!) Now, please vote on this feature request to get WinRM polling at the node level (for compatible devices) in NPM: Support Win-RM for Node Details Polling in NPM
In a network where we montor systems we supply to customers, some of the firewalls are restricted so WMI is not ideal. We have ACLs in place on the routers to deal with WMI port nightmare but would be great to just have IMCP and winRM over HTTPS. Without WMI access, the nodes are discovered at the moment. So using WinRM instead of WMI over DCOM would be great for - node adding/discovey, pollers (node, interface, volumes). I know SAM has the WinRM option now and I'm looking at that.
