There appears to be much good that can come from leveraging Solarwinds API capabilities, but I find no great GUI to lead me through the maze of customization.
I'd like three levels of API information and a GUI to implement them all.
- API Basics--what an API is, why you'd want to use it, terminology used. The basics.
- API Intermediate--the process of how to leverage SW API technology, where to access it, how to write the commands, examples of how other SW customers have improved their monitoring and reporting and discovery environment through API's
- API Advanced--Analyze examples of API implementations, identify mistakes or inefficiencies, everything that it takes to make a Solarwinds customer capable and competent and comfortable implementing an API in any SW module. Break this down by SW application (NPM, SAM, DPA, etc.)
I saw a reference to the API in a response to one of my questions (here: How might one filter out Cisco 4510 "controlled" and "uncontrolled" ports from monitored NPM interfaces? ) and the syntax and process were over my head. I don't even know where to start, even if I just wanted to copy the syntax provided and paste it in "somewhere"--where, I've no clue.
Help us be more powerful SW admins by providing information about API's and how to tie into SW and make our lives easier and our bosses impressed!
