Licensing clarification of Log Manager

I want to do the latest upgrades but I'm confused about the licensing. We have VMAN 320 sockets, but we haven't bought Log Manager.

When we upgrade we want to use the feature in VMAN 8.4 to alert on VMware events - we really want that feature - and I'm assuming this is included in the VMAN we paid for.

Does this use some type of free Log Manager? What are the limitations. Normally Log Manager takes over Syslog/Traps, but since we haven't paid for Log Manager will they keep working using the legacy features?

I can't upgrade now because this seems very confused.

It's worth noting that I'm trying out Log Manager now (eval) and I can see it appears to be able to pick up Windows Event logs - this is something we have wanted for a while and have been looking at non-SolarWinds products. When I looked at a quote for Log Analyzer I saw that it only went up to 1,000 nodes - we're well past that. How would you monitor 2000 VMs? We had no plans to monitor Windows event logs with Solarwinds modules (I'm not a fan of LEM) but perhaps this will do what we need. But we don't want to do that today, perhaps in a couple of months.

When I looked at a quote for Log Analyzer I saw that it only went up to 1,000 nodes - we're well past that. Your sales rep can get you a quote for a larger license the main thing here is that you cannot surpass 1000 events per second

^ still a bit confused. We have traps and syslog events going to SolarWinds. So does this mean the Free edition of Orion Log Viewer allows us to view these, as well as the VMware events?

Orion Log Viewer gives you access to your traps and syslog events going to SolarWinds, the only caveat is that you'll have to reconfigure your rules once you upgrade to using VMware events. The Orion Log Viewer is using a new backend db, so that's why the reconfiguration of syslog and trap rules is necessary.

So to summarize, your VMware events feature is covered under your VMAN license. With the VMware events, you'll have real time polling, event handling and your syslog and traps will be upgraded to use the Orion Log Viewer as the backend solution.

Still slightly confused. We can upgrade to VMAN and it will use Orion Log Viewer for VMware events, and because it is installing that it will swap over syslog and traps to this new Orion Log Viewer, all included, no licensing hiccups. Any rules we have we have to manually re-create.

Note. How would we know what these events were? How would you list them, in a report, with some SWIS?

Here comes the difficult question I was skirting around. What is the different between this version included with VMAN and buying the Log Manager (or Analyzer) product? It seems like the product included with VMAN does syslog/traps (at whatever speed they arrive), and you buy the licenses to extend functionality to include other types of messages/events, i.e. Windows Event Log events. As it happens we really do have a need to collect Windows Event Log events, so we could likely be interested in extending the functionality. I just want to avoid error messages about syslog overload or nodes being unlicensed.
