Node Down - monitored by Agent Service - but I can ping the server so its up - oh wait the windows service is down....again!!

Sorry about the slapstick but it gets rather annoying.

I use the agent as we have DMZ which normally means not everyone has access. Turns out to be two people in Infrastructure.

So my request is when the agent service stops can Solarwinds not put some intelligence in and check if it can ping, at least it wont show as down if it can get to it?

This is tied to the method used to check polling status. If you List Resources for those nodes, you can see the system is using the Agent to determine status and response time of the node. It defaults to 'Status & Response Time Agent' for agent nodes.

You can change it here to use ICMP/ping if you don't want to use the agent for status/response time. If the agent stops working, the node will still show up. The downside is if the agent stops working, you won't know unless you have something else in place to alert/report on inactive agents.

You can also use Manage Pollers in Settings - Node & Group Management to manage the polling method. Enable/disable the appropriate poller on your devices as required.

I feel like it should be a popup when you do a list resources on an agent though, giving an explanation.

With maybe an option to setup an automatic alert?

Ok so realised there is an option to alert on agent status so maybe the solution. Setup the below to email will change the list resources above and report back.

Ps the agent reboot pending above is not needed, but i have a server that has reboot pending and they wont let me reboot

hmmm I have 191 that have agents installed with no way of adjusting the list resources for all... aghhhhhh!!!!

You can use Manage Pollers from the main Settings page to bulk change them. I can't remember off the top of my head whether disabling the Agent polling reverts to ICMP polling or if enabling ICMP overrides the Agent polling (try it on a node and see ).

But as you said below, if the firewalls or remote servers block ICMP/ping from the polling engine - you'll need that sorted first.
