Multiple PostgreSQL server instances

I currently have 37 PostGreSQL server instances running for WHD. There's a similar number running for another program (not a SW product). I am trying to track down some server and database performance issues on this server, and I am seeing this massive number of server instances and questioning it. Is this typical or even explainable for WHD?

This is typical and is one of the reasons why people separate the database onto another server.

You could always consider a different database type, however even if they don't have numerous instances, they will still require equivalent performance.

As you have numerous applications using this database type, I'd recommend moving them off from the same server.

Thank you. I am actually in the process of moving all of my databases to a dedicated SQL server, so I appreciate that you are advising the same. I have a database expert doing the heavy lifting on that project. Thought I would pose this question here as he is not available to me for a short time.

If WHD and the other app I have using this DB backend can be done on MS SQL instead, I will go that route so that maintenance, security, and backups can all happen in concert with the standard procedures being defined and implemented for our other databases.
