Looking to group application templates/components, nodes, volumes etc... all together so that I can click group name and it reports statues

I'm reporting on applications and their statues, and I've been using custom properties for Nodes and Applications, by using AppName on Nodes and Applications.

However now I realise that I need to show the volumes and hypervisor hosts etc.... to utilise the groups dynamic query function.

Does anyone else also monitor from an application point of view and provide this much info within their Manage Groups, or is there another simpler way to produce the same thing;

I've created CP AppName on Nodes and Applications separately and had to add the values in separately, and my thought process is that I have to create volumes CP AppName and Hypervisor CP AppName, so on and so on .... #CONFUSED.COM

Any help would be greatly appreciated on this subject. Thanks in advance

I'm confused as to what we are looking at. Is this the "AppStack Environment" widget on the group details page?

*IF* that is correct, then I am getting much different results than you are. My results are opposite but equally wrong, in that my appstack is showing everything. every group, every app, every node, etc, even for things that are in no way related to anything in my group.

Oh! I added the wrong widget... There is an "AppStack for ${CAPTION}" widget. That one on the Group details page shows exactly what you got. It only shows objects directly in the group, not the related entities.

And you are right, it's not going to show what you want without a LOT of work

The way this "should" work, but does not. You should be able to add a dynamic query to add things like Volume, where the Node custom property = whatever, but alas that option is not there.

This is a definite missing feature. So step one is to add a feature request in thwack so maybe they will fix it.. Step two is cry, but just a little. Step three is to add a bunch of "custom query" widgets to the group details page and figure out all of the queries you have to do to display all of the information you want.

Alternatively you do as you expressed above, which is to add custom properties to each object type and add dynamic queries to the group. Both of those options are difficult. With this option I would create alerts like "if the volume CP does not equal the Node CP" then run the action to set the volume custom property.

Now I am thinking that you should abandon the entire idea of using groups. To put it bluntly groups just suck in Orion/Solarwinds Platform.

If you have one or two "applications" you want to do like this, then create a custom view for each one with a bunch of "Custom tables" or "custom query" widgets to get all of the information you want on one view. Or maybe a dashboard. Then link those dashbaords or views into the menu.

Yep correct on only directly in the group.

Duplicate Custom Properties that go across nodes, applications, volumes, interfaces, hypervisor etc.. that's an admin nightmare.

Yeah, I'm currently adding loads dynamic queries to fill up my different groups, but they take so long to create. The Groups I can create via a script, but the dynamic queries, I haven't found a script way to do just yet...

You might be right, using Alerts to update these fields and use the Node as a master field as the source. Just need to create several alerts for this to happen (<10 is manageable).

Anyways thanks for your input with this brscott I'll let you know how this pans out shortly.

In a more larger scale environment, I have created a default view with all I want to show, and limit the displaying of resources (i.e. Windows, AIX, Linux, ALL UNIX, WAN nodes, WPM Transactions, LAN nodes, etc) with the account's permissions using custom property. The users will see what they have permissions on. Later on, if I tune-up the view, it will apply to all. Of course I have some exceptions and need to create individual view. Most common in my case, I have a NotifyGroup custom property to put an AD group (Security/Distribution) for NPM, SAM, WPM, etc., then I create an NPM group account using those as permission filters. Unfortunately you are limited to 3 limitations.

As for alerts, I have also common alerts sending email to a generic email account which have rules looking at the content for these NotifyGroup custom property values, and redirecting emails based on those NotifyGroup.
